About the Organization
Birdsong Communications Group (BCG) is a full service marketing and communications development firm located in Alexandria, Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area that has been providing strategic services for an international and national client base that includes Fortune 500 companies, not-for-profit organizations, and special interest groups for over twenty years. Since 1988, BCG has effectively provided significant outcomes for a diverse client base with a particular focus on the non profit sector and on initiatives that focus on culture, education and the environment.
We are strong advocates of interdisciplinary collaboration and stakeholder participation and understand the power of creativity and thinking outside of the box and extending boundaries of thought in order to develop new solutions. Moreover, we are committed to innovative public/private partnership development and to assisting our clients with the identification of those relationships that encourage growth and expansion of their specific mission.

Corinne Birdsong Winburn, Prinicipal
Corinne Birdsong Winburn is the Founder and President of Birdsong Communications Group, which has provided strategic planning and comprehensive development and project management services to a wide range of clients, including the United Nations Association during their 1990 International Conference on Literacy, Time Life Books Inc, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, United Way of America, the Washington, DC based Environmental Health Center and many cultural institutions. Established in 1988, Birdsong Communications Group has focused principally on the development and the management of multifaceted educational programs, the development of issue related campaigns and has advised both profit and non-profit organizations on strategic growth issues for nearly two decades. Advocacy representation, creative coalition building, innovative partnership development, special events management and associated fundraising are key services offered to our clients.
During the past twenty years, Ms. Winburn has served on various boards in key leadership roles. As program and corporate Partnership Advisor to the United Nations Association during the 1990 National Conference on Literacy, Ms. Winburn and Birdsong Communications Group spearheaded the development of strategic partnerships with the ABC/Capital Cities PLUS (Project Literacy US) program, the US Chamber of Commerce and other national entities interested in combating illiteracy globally through the use of media and community outreach activities.
She served as the Development Chairman and Program Advisor to the U.S. Planning Committee for the International Association of Women in Radio and Television and as a national Competition Juror for the United Way of America’s Second Century Awards. As communications and marketing Committee Chairman for the 1990 and 1991 International Children’s Festival at Wolf Trap National Park for The Performing Arts, Ms. Winburn worked in conjunction with staff and board members to enhance the strategic partnership and outreach of this international cultural event.
Corinne also worked closely with the late Hank Schnabel, former curator of the Diplomatic Reception Rooms to create a successful fundraising outreach entity that successfully committed significant funds for the preservation of the collection at the State Department.
In her early career as a public affairs professional and educator, Ms. Winburn served as a congressional assistant in the office of Congressman Norman Sisisky where she researched and addressed key legislative issues for constituents. She also served as liaison for communications and cultural programming for Spoleto Festival USA and for the Young Concert Artists, Inc. at the Kennedy Center. Working for a Chevy Chase based public affairs firm, Corinne served as a strategic member of the issues marketing team that developed a national public awareness and advocacy campaign for NIMH. The DART campaign (Depression, Awareness, Recognition, Treatment) was a multi faceted informational campaign that reached audiences across the nation. Prior to moving to the state of Virginia, Ms. WInburn also developed and managed informational programs for the National Park Service and the Department of Interior in the State of North Carolina.
Corinne also served as a cultural ambassador to Berlin with the Friendship Force International Program under the direction of Mrs. Jimmy Carter. It is through this early educational experience that she acquired her enthusiasm for international cultural exchange as a mechanism for promoting global awareness.
In the l990’s, with William A. Winburn, Corinne also helped develop a state of the art child care facility located in the internationally recognized Kentlands community. Formerly, she was also co-owner of the Mansion Flats, LLC real estate development project located in Beaufort, South Carolina.
Ms. Winburn is a former member of the Virginia State Opera Board, where she helped guide state wide fundraising efforts for youth oriented opera events and was the first to bring performances to the Masonic Temple venue in Alexandria, Virginia. She was an active member of the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria board for nine years and served as chairperson of the board for two years, working to transform this organization into one of the most influential non profits in the city of Alexandria and remains passionate about education and youth.
Formerly, she was a member of the Education Committee Board of the Corcoran Museum of Art in Washington, D.C. and was an active state board member for Jobs for Virginia’s Graduates, an affiliate of the national organization, JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) which is committed to drop out prevention, job transition and placement for high school graduates across the state of Virginia.
In addition to her professional pursuits, Ms. Winburn is an exhibited and published photographer, an aspiring writer, a culinary enthusiast and a designer of creative learning environments. Formerly, she taught visual literacy and media application workshops to students and instructors in the State of North Carolina and worked with nationally recognized media literacy expert Dr. David Considine and Caldecott winner Gail Haley creating educational films and media materials for youth.
Corinne continues to maintain her interests in the development of creative media programs through her strategic Education committee work with the Corcoran Museum of Art and Design. She is committed to the use of technology to educate and to inform audiences of all ages. She is also the proud parent of an active teenager, Thomas Mills Winburn.
EDUCATION
Ms. Winburn holds a B.S. degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology, and M.A. in Instructional Design and Communications Technology. Additionally, she completed graduate studies in International Communications at American University in Washington, D.C. and in Strategic Management at the Wharton School of Finance and attended Harvard’s Graduate School of Architecture and Design to complete interdisciplinary work focused on the development of creative learning facilities and the intersection of innovative business solutions and the creative process. She was the recipient of a 1986 Hearst Foundation Arts Scholarship Grant to attend the American Foundation Program sponsored by the Reynolda House Museum of American Art and Wake Forest University. She is a multi year participant in “Learning and The Brain” conferences sponsored by MIT, Johns Hopkins, and Harvard University. She is an active participant in the Aspen Institute Arts Summit.
